I’m shaking… someone has been posing as my great grandfather for months and I didn’t know. Has this happened to anyone else?
**
I am actually spiraling right now and I don’t know what happened.
For the last few months, I’ve been texting and with what I thought was my great grandfather. We’ve had brief check-ins, nothing much but something seemed off. He’s older, so I just assumed some of his "off" phrasing was just him getting used to technology.
Today, I got a voicemail from a completely different number. It was actually him. He was calling to check in because he said he hadn't heard from me in a while and wanted to try my old number. I was floored. I don’t have a new number.
I realized that someone somehow hacked his contact info in my phone AND Instagram. I have been talking to a stranger for months. I feel so violated. This hacker knew personal things, family updates, everything.
Is this a common thing? Why would someone even do this? Are they just waiting to ask for money?
I’m so worried about what they’re going to do with all the info I gave them. I feel like such an idiot.
Has anyone else dealt with this kind of "long-con" identity theft?
