Curious about how Satish Shah lost money to a phishing attempt

Yeah fingers crossed for him really hope something works out. But you know what even if the money doesn't come back at least this story is going to make other people stop and think. When you hear about some random person in another city you're like ah that's sad but whatever. But when it's an 84 year old from your own city from an area you probably know and he lost 25 lakh that hits different. Suddenly it's not just some news it's real. Could be your neighbour could be your uncle could be someone you see at the local shop. That kind of thing makes people actually pay attention and warn their families. So maybe some good will come out of this after all.

It says he got a link to fill an electronic form with his debit card details and then immediately started getting messages about money being taken out. So it happened in real time. He was probably watching those messages pop up one after another and couldn't do anything. Called the bank and blocked the card but by then 25 lakh was already gone. That must have been terrifying just sitting there watching your life savings disappear.

Yeah. When there's a real person with a real age and a real city it just stays with you. My mom usually ignores all these posts but when I showed her this she actually sat and read everything. Sometimes that's all it takes. One story that feels close to home.

Honestly this whole thing made me sit down with my little brother yesterday 💀 he's 15 and acts like he knows everything about the internet just because he's on reels all day. showed him how these scams actually work and bro was genuinely shook. he was like wait they can do that??? and i was like yeah bro that's literally what happened to that 84 year old uncle. he said he never knew scams could be like this. so at least one kid out there is safer now. small win i guess.

What bothers me is how these scammers never seem to get caught. Like we keep hearing case after case but do they ever actually find these people. Feels like they operate with zero fear.

Some do get caught but it takes time and usually only when multiple people complain about the same number or same method. The problem is they keep changing numbers and changing tactics. By the time police catch up they're already onto the next thing.

I showed this to my father and he said he gets messages like that all the time but never thought much of it. Now he said he'll just delete without opening. Small win 👍

It's crazy how fast these scammers adapt. Like we're all here talking about SMS phishing and they're already onto the next thing. My aunt almost got caught in a WhatsApp scam just last week. Someone messaged her pretending to be my cousin saying their phone broke and this was their new number. Asked her to send money urgently for some emergency. She was literally about to do it but something felt off so she called my cousin's old number to check. Turned out his phone was working fine and he knew nothing about it. So yeah the platform changes but the trick is the same. Make it urgent make it emotional and rush people into acting without thinking. That's why we can't just warn our families once and call it done. Have to keep reminding them because the scammers are always trying new angles.

That's becoming so common now. Always call the person on their old number to verify before sending anything. Even if they say it's an emergency. Scammers use that panic to make you act fast.

It's crazy how many different ways they try sms, calls, whatsapp, email feels like we need a whole class in school just on spotting scams. we learn math and science and history but nothing about how to stay safe online. makes no sense honestly. like this should be basic life skills at this point.

Bro seriously. i'm 26 and work in tech and even i had to teach my own parents about this stuff. school never covers it college never covers it. you just learn by almost getting scammed yourself or seeing someone else go through it. my friend lost 50k last year to a similar thing and that's when it really hit me. now i send every article i see to our family group chat. they get annoyed but i don't care. rather they be annoyed than lose their money. honestly should be taught as basic life skill right up there with learning to file taxes.

Bro same 💀 my family group chat is just me sending scam warnings and everyone else sending good morning quotes. but last week my mom actually stopped and asked me if a message was fake before clicking. felt like i won an achievement or something.

My parents are the worst with this honestly. they click everything that pops up on their phones. free offers lottery wins bank alerts doesn't matter they just tap away. drives me crazy. so last month I literally took a sticky note and wrote in big bold letters DON'T CLICK LINKS ASK ME FIRST and stuck it right on their laptop screen. my mom laughed at first but now whenever something looks off she actually calls me to check. saved her twice already from those fake parcel delivery messages. so yeah small win but I'll take it.

The scary part is these scams are getting so good. like the messages look exactly like real bank messages now. same fonts same format same everything. my friend almost fell for one last month and she works in marketing.

Yeah the fake websites are getting insane. like they don't look fake at all anymore. last month my cousin got a message that looked exactly like her bank. same logo same colors same font everything. she clicked the link and it took her to a page that was a perfect copy of the bank login page. she was about to put her password when something felt off and she called me. I checked the url and it was something long and weird with a bunch of random words instead of the real bank website. she couldn't believe it. she was like how is this fake it looks exactly the same. and honestly if you're not paying close attention you wouldn't even notice. these scammers are literally copying entire bank websites pixel by pixel. they probably have people who know design working for them. the only way to catch it is looking at the web address very carefully or better yet never clicking links at all and just typing the bank website yourself every time. scary how real it all looks now.

Your cousin's story is exactly why i'm scared for my parents. they wouldn't even think to check the url. they'd just put their password and move on. but my younger sister who's 16? she spotted a fake message last week before i even saw it. just glanced at it and said this is fake. i asked how she knew and she was like the logo is slightly off and the grammar is weird. growing up online actually trained her brain for this stuff i guess.

Best thing I did was get a separate sim for all the random signups and deliveries. That number gets all the spam now and my main number stays clean. Takes five minutes at any shop.

Bro that's actually a genius level move. i've been dealing with spam calls for years and never thought of this. my main number is out there everywhere from college days old jobs random app signups. can't even change it now because everything is linked to it. but a second number for all the new signups and deliveries? perfect. keeps the main one clean going forward. gonna set this up for myself this week. appreciate the tip man.

At this point we need like a family group chat rule. if it's money related call first. no exceptions. even if the message says it's urgent. specially if it says urgent.
