Curious about how Satish Shah lost money to a phishing attempt

For real. Scammers know that word makes people act without thinking. my rule is simple if someone's rushing me it's probably fake. real banks never rush you.

Something i've noticed is scammers always try to catch people when they're busy or distracted. like they know you're more likely to make mistakes when you're in a hurry or tired. that's why those messages always come at random times not when you're sitting calmly thinking. honestly best thing is to just not engage with anything money related when you're not fully focused. if it's important they can wait till you have time to think clearly.

Yeah and that's why for older people especially we need really simple rules they can remember even when they're tired or distracted. i tell my parents just one thing. never use any number someone gives you. if it's about money always call a number you already have. from your card from the bank's app from your old statements. that one rule covers almost everything.

Honestly all these rules we're discussing come down to just one simple thing. pause before you act. that's literally it. scammers don't want you to think they want you to move fast without using your brain. that's why they always create panic or excitement. either your account will be closed or you won some prize or there's an emergency with your family. both make you react without thinking. your heart starts racing and you just do what they say. But if you just stop for five seconds. literally just five seconds. take a breath and think wait is this real. that small pause is enough for your brain to catch up. you start noticing things. why would my bank text me from a random number. why is this person rushing me. why do i need to click a link instead of just logging in myself. in those five seconds the whole thing starts feeling fake. My problem is in the moment when someone's rushing you it's hard to remember to pause. so i actually practiced with myself. whenever my phone buzzes with something urgent i trained myself to just put it down for a moment before looking. sounds silly but it works. that five second pause can save everything honestly.

This whole conversation lowkey made me realise we need like a family scam drill or something. sounds funny but think about it. once a month just sit with everyone for ten minutes and go over the basics. new scams that are going around. simple rules to follow. annoying for sure but way less annoying than losing money. my family would roll their eyes but they'd thank me later.
